The apostle Paul.

Paul was one of the first Missionary in the Christina Church, When he became a Christian, he fell from these heights to the level of the despised and downtrodden. The litany of his sufferings in the cause of Christ is astonishing

(2 Cor. 11:23-28). It is hard to imagine that a human body could survive so much cruel treatment.

Yet he had no regrets that he exchanged a life of privilege for a life of hardship. He said that he counted all his losses as dung (Phil. 3:8). Why? Because the sacrifice gained him something better—"the excellency of the knowledge of Christ Jesus" (Phil. 3:8).

A fruitful ministry for God is impossible without sacrifice. Yet there is no such thing as sacrifice, for we gain more than we lose. "The Son of man also came .... to give his life a ransom." The sacrifice was voluntary, not compulsory. God did not force Him to lay down His life; He chose to do so (compare John 10:11). We must also do the same, in the name of Jesus.
